AI is here to stay, and I, for one, am fully on board with it. This year I've been working on how I leverage ChatGPT for my own business. And after lots (and lots) of trial and error, I have begun to improve how I utilise specific, detailed prompts in ChatGPT to level up my website strategy and business performance.

I'm not (yet) an AI expert, but I'm all for knowledge sharing. So here's some of the prompts I've used that will hopefully help you out in the same way they've helped me. Remember: you can always give ChatGPT some additional context then ask it to complete the task again. And once you're happy with the breakdown, you should then think of these prompts as a starting point rather than your final answer.

1. Understanding your target customer

Understanding your target customer is essential to building a website that speaks to their needs and motivations. ChatGPT can help you clarify your customer profile and get a deeper look into their pain points, desires, and purchasing behaviours.

Prompt example (it's long!):

Act as an expert brand strategist and behavioural psychologist. Your role is to help me deeply understand the target audience for [business name], so I can achieve my goal of [your goal, e.g., ‘creating more effective marketing content’]. Your insights should not only describe the audience but also provide actionable recommendations for tailoring my strategies to connect with and convert them effectively.

The target audience is: [include a detailed description of your target audience. For example, ‘service-based business owners who want to grow their brand by improving their website and business strategy.’]

The business offers: [provide an overview of your products/services. For example, ‘website design, SEO, and business strategy services.’]

Your Analysis Should Cover:

  1. Key Pain Points

    • What challenges or frustrations are they likely experiencing that my products/services could solve?

    • Provide specific examples of how these pain points impact their daily lives or businesses.

    • Suggest ways to address these pain points through messaging or service delivery.

  2. Key Desires and Motivations

    • What are they looking to achieve by purchasing my products/services?

    • How can I tap into these desires to make my offerings more compelling?

    • Highlight emotional and practical motivators that influence their purchasing decisions.

  3. Goals and Aspirations

    • What are their professional or personal goals?

    • How can my business help them achieve these aspirations?

    • Suggest ways to align my messaging with their long-term vision.

  4. Values and Beliefs

    • What core values and beliefs shape their decisions?

    • How can my brand align with these values to build trust and loyalty?

    • Include suggestions for incorporating these values into branding and communication.

  5. Demographics

    • Provide a detailed breakdown of their age, gender, location, income level, education, and other relevant details.

    • Explain how these demographic factors influence their needs and preferences.

  6. Psychographics

    • What are their interests, hobbies, and lifestyle habits?

    • How do these insights inform the way I communicate and connect with them?

    • Suggest ways to reflect these psychographics in my marketing and service delivery.

  7. Decision-Making Factors

    • What factors are most important to them when choosing a product or service? (e.g., price, quality, trust, convenience.)

    • How can I position my business to meet or exceed their expectations?

    • Provide tips for addressing objections or hesitations they might have.

I want you to end your analysis with a summary that covers:

  • Customer Persona Summary: Create a concise and vivid persona that encapsulates the audience’s key traits, needs, and preferences.

  • Key Insights and Takeaways: Summarise the most important points I can use to [your goal, e.g., ‘guide my marketing efforts,’ ‘refine my website design,’ or ‘improve my customer journey’].

Before you begin, feel free to ask me for any additional details about my business, target audience, or goals to ensure your analysis is as accurate and useful as possible.

Why it works:

This prompt helps you get a clear picture of who you’re speaking to on your website. The more specific you can be about their needs and desires, the easier it will be to create content that resonates. Understanding your target audience is probably the most important thing you can do for your business, so this is my #1 recommended prompt!

2. Defining your business goals

If you don't know your business goals, you can't define your website goals. And it's very hard to design a website without having clarity on the end goal for it. That's why I often share this prompt for my new clients who aren't certain of their business direction to work through before we work together.

Prompt example (it's long again!):

Act like an expert business strategist and growth consultant. Your role is to help me define clear and actionable goals for [business name], so I can achieve [your overarching objective, e.g., ‘sustainable growth and improved profitability’]. You should provide a structured framework for defining these goals, breaking them down into short-term, medium-term, and long-term objectives.

The business is: [include a brief description of your business, e.g my business is ‘a website design agency specialising in Wix and Squarespace for service-based businesses’].

The products or services we offer are: [describe your offerings, e.g. my services are ‘website design, SEO strategy, and website audits’].

Our current challenges or areas for improvement include: [e.g. ‘generating consistent leads, increasing customer retention, and scaling the business’].

Based on this description, I want you to guide me through defining my business goals by providing a detailed breakdown of the following aspects:

  1. Vision and mission alignment: How to align my goals with the broader vision and mission of my business.

  2. Short-term goals (0-12 months): Specific actions and targets I can focus on in the next year to address immediate challenges or opportunities.

  3. Medium-term goals (1-3 years): Strategies to build on short-term achievements and lay the foundation for sustained growth.

  4. Long-term goals (3+ years): Broader aspirations that reflect where I want my business to be in the future.

  5. Key performance indicators (KPIs): Metrics I can use to measure success for each goal.

  6. Actionable steps: Practical strategies and actions to achieve these goals, considering my resources, market position, and challenges.

  7. Potential obstacles: Common challenges or risks I might face when pursuing these goals and how to mitigate them.

I want you to end with a summary of my business goals, categorised into short-term, medium-term, and long-term, along with recommendations for tracking progress and staying aligned with my overarching objective.

Before you start, please feel free to ask me for any additional information you need about my business to improve the quality of your answer.

Why it works:

Every website needs a clear business goal. Whether it’s increasing sales, growing your email list, or improving customer engagement, a website without a defined purpose is like a car without a destination.

This prompt provides a clear structure for business owners to define their goals whilst ensuring alignment with their broader vision, as well as practical steps for execution.

  1. Building a lead generation strategy

Looking to streamline your lead generation efforts and see measurable results? Lead generation is essential for any business looking to grow their customer base and increase revenue. But many business owners struggle with knowing where to start or how to focus their efforts effectively.

Prompt example (you guessed it - long again!):

Act as a lead generation expert and digital strategist. Your role is to help me optimise my website to attract and convert more leads for [business name], so I can achieve my goal of [your goal, e.g., ‘increasing inquiries and growing my email list’]. I want you to provide a detailed breakdown of strategies and actionable recommendations tailored to my target audience and offerings.

The business is: [include a brief description of your business, e.g., ‘a website design agency specialising in helping service-based businesses improve their online presence’].

The products or services we offer are: [describe your offerings, e.g., ‘website design, SEO strategy, and website audits’].

Our target audience is: [include a brief description, e.g., ‘service based business owners looking for professional website design to help grow their online presence’].

Based on this description, I want you to provide a strategic, in-depth plan for the following:

  1. Lead Magnets

    • Suggest ideas for lead magnets that would provide high value to my target audience, such as [examples relevant to the business, e.g., free guides, templates, or webinars].

    • Explain how to align lead magnet topics with the audience’s biggest pain points and desires.

    • Recommend specific ways to promote these lead magnets on my website (e.g., pop-ups, dedicated landing pages, or sidebar CTAs) and other channels (e.g., social media or email campaigns).

    • Highlight best practices for designing lead magnets to maximise downloads, including tips for visuals, titles, and descriptions.

  2. Email marketing

    • Provide ideas for an email welcome sequence that nurtures leads after they sign up for a lead magnet.

    • Suggest additional email content ideas that keep subscribers engaged (e.g., educational content, case studies, or exclusive offers).

    • Discuss ways to use segmentation to personalise emails based on user behaviour or demographics.

    • Offer tips for optimising email subject lines, layouts, and CTAs to encourage clicks and conversions.

    • Share advice on how to analyse email marketing performance (e.g., open rates, click-through rates) and use the data to refine future campaigns.

  3. Client Outreach

    1. Suggest strategies for reaching out directly to potential clients (e.g., cold emailing, LinkedIn messaging) in a way that feels personal and value-driven.

    2. Provide examples of outreach templates or scripts tailored to [the target audience].

    3. Highlight methods for following up effectively with potential clients to increase the likelihood of conversion.

    4. Explain how to integrate outreach efforts with email marketing and lead magnets to create a cohesive strategy.

    5. Recommend tools or platforms to streamline outreach efforts, such as email automation tools or CRM systems.

I want you to end with a step-by-step, prioritised action plan summarising how to implement these three aspects of lead generation effectively.

Before you start, feel free to ask for any additional details about my business, audience, or current lead generation efforts to refine your recommendations further.

Why it works:

This prompt is designed to provide targeted, actionable advice on three of the most impactful aspects of lead generation: creating irresistible lead magnets, nurturing potential clients through email marketing, and directly reaching out to prospects in a personalised, value-driven way.

By using this prompt, you’ll gain a clear, step-by-step strategy tailored to your business, helping you attract the right audience, build trust, and convert leads into loyal customers.

Are you ready to leverage ChatGPT to improve your website strategy and performance?

As much as AI can be a huge help in improving your website strategy, it’s important to remember that it’s just a tool. Use it to spark ideas, refine your strategy, and improve your design, but always bring your personal touch to the work. Your website should reflect your unique business values and speak to your target audience in an authentic way.

I hope these prompts inspire you to try out ChatGPT in a thoughtful and strategic way. Start with one or two of these (or all three!), and see how it helps you better understand your business and your customers.

But remember, no tool can replace the creative, personal touch you bring to your work. So if you're still looking for a real human to work with? Then take a look at my Business Blueprint Service to see how we can work together to shape your business future.
